Qualifying Able Seaman Sea Time Reduced

• The National Defense Authorization Act reduced the sea time requirements for National Able Seaman endorsements by half for applications processed from 22 December 2023 and 22 December 2026.

STCW Qualified Assessors Extension

• USCG is accepting STCW assessments performed by Non-Coast Guard Approved Assessors who meet the requirements specified in NVIC 19-14 until December 31, 2028.
  

Extension of Administrative Grace Period

The National Defense Authorization Act modified the national renewal grace period from 1-year to six years. The new 6-year grace period allows an expired MMC to be renewed during this grace period to be renewed. However, in some cases an open book examination may be necessary or may be issued without further examination or training, provided all other requirements for renewal have been met.
